Skullcandy MFM Pro Headphones With Integrated Mirasol PMP

Skullcandy has unveiled a set of combination headphones and PMP player, which is the first such device to include Qualcomm’s innovative mirasol display technology. The Skullcandy MFM Pro headphones have a slot-in PMP that can both be used with the over-the-ear headphones as well as any other sort of earbuds courtesy of the standard 3.5mm audio socket. mirasol, meanwhile, uses the same concept that makes a butterfly’s wings iridescent to create a color display with dramatically lowered power consumption.

mirasol uses tiny flexible membranes that react to electrical charges, overlaid onto a mirrored surface; light reflected back out through those membranes is refracted so that interfering wavelengths create colors. Because the membranes used are bistable, once they have been set to display a certain color they require virtually no power to maintain it, only to change. The system also needs no color filters, no strong backlighting to be visible in direct sunlight and no polarizing lenses.

The end result is far greater battery life and, in the case of the Skullcandy headphones, a display that can be seen clearly even when taking part in extreme sports such as snowboarding. In fact, the mirasol display only gets brighter when subjected to direct sunlight.

Audio quality of the prototype we tried at CTIA was very good, and while the show floor made it difficult to make an especially accurate judgement, we expect the final product to bring some strong competition to prosumer headphones such as the Beats by Dr. Dre and Monster. Pricing and PMP capacity is yet to be decided, as is exact

Listen To Music While Riding Your Bike And Not Crashing

The iSound, designed by Seohyun Baek, is a set of headphones that allow you to listen to your mp3 player while still hearing the background noises around you. This is good for those of you that ride your bike to work and haven’t been able to listen to music because your current headphones block everything out making it harder to notice sounds of things like oncoming traffic.

The headphones use a semi-circular design so that they don’t cover your whole ear like other headphones. This allows some background noise to find its way into your ears making the experience more like listening to a stereo. Of course this will reduce the dynamic range of the sound but it’s a trade off for safety.

This is definitely a niche product as those of us who are allergic to spandex and bicycle seats are usually trying to drown out the sounds of everyone else’s mp3 players and cellphones blaring away during rush hour.

Sony DR-BT160AS Sport Bluetooth Headphones

Someday bluetooth equipped headphones will be indistinguishable from regular models, but unfortunately today is not that day. And that’s why these new DR-BT160AS ‘Active’ stereo headphones from Sony feature a large pod on either side to accommodate batteries as well as the bluetooth reciever. On the plus side, if you’re a runner or like to listen to music during physical activities, you won’t have to deal with a pesky cord bouncing around and can instead stream music from a bluetooth friendly MP3 player or cellphone. The headphones also includes a built-in mic allowing you to make or take calls if you are using it with a phone, and a set of playback buttons for remotely skipping tracks or adjusting the volume. The soft elastomer hangers feature a sliding earpiece shaft ensuring a secure and comfortable fit, and the whole thing is splashproof meaning sweat won’t hurt it, but you’ll probably want to keep it out of the rain. Expect it to be available from the Sony website sometime in October.

New Apple Premium In-Ear Headphones With Dual Drivers

To go with the Skittles smorgasbord of new iPod nanos, Apple’s got a bunch of new accessories. By far the most exciting are their new premium in-ear headphones. They’ve got dual drivers (woofer + tweeter), a setup you don’t see until about the $200 mark with say, Ultimate Ears’ Super.fi 5 Pro or Shure’s E4c-n set, which used to be over $300. And these have got a built-in remote and mic. Yet they’re only $79. The first iPod earbuds that don’t suck—amazing. Not so amazing: It appears that their remote and mic only work with the iPods launched today.

Ars indicates that mayyyybe the playback controls will work. (Laaaame.) They come with three sizes of silicon tips—which could be a problem, since great isolation headphones gotta have a perfect seal, otherwise they can sound flat. It’s why Shures come with a ridiculous number of tips. There’s also a carrying case in the box. Of course, while they sound great on paper, we’ll have to actually shove them in our ears to see how they compete against the big boys of high-end headphones.

Also on the menu are new headphones and armbands. They’ve got an in-line control feature with volume and playback control (next, prev, play pause) from the button as well. There’s a microphone on the back that works with the voice recording apps, but as with the premiums, the expanded features only work with the new iPods. They’ll be $29 next month.

iRiver P.Ple P20
